Understanding Oral Cancers

Oral cancer encompasses cancers that develop in the mouth and pharynx, which includes the back of the throat. While accounting for about three percent of all new cancer diagnoses in the United States annually, it remains a significant health concern. Approximately 53,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer each year, and tragically, about 10,800 individuals succumb to the disease. On average, around 66 percent of those diagnosed with oral cancer manage to survive for five years or more. However, early detection is crucial for better treatment outcomes and improved survival rates.

Oral cancer tends to affect individuals aged 55-64 most commonly and affects more than twice as many men as women. Several factors can contribute to the development of oral cancer:

    1. Tobacco and Alcohol Use:

Any form of tobacco use, including smoking cigarettes, puts individuals at risk. Additionally, heavy alcohol consumption increases the chances of developing the disease. Combining tobacco and alcohol usage presents an even higher risk than using either substance alone.

    2. HPV Infection:

Certain types of oral cancers have been linked to infection with the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (specifically the HPV 16 type).

    3.Age:

The risk of oral cancer increases with age, with the majority of cases occurring in people over the age of 40.

    4. Sun Exposure:

Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause cancer of the lip.

Recognizing the potential signs and symptoms of oral cancer is vital for early detection and prompt medical attention. If any of the following symptoms persist for more than two weeks, individuals should promptly consult a dentist or physician:

  • Persistent soreness, irritation, lump, or thick patch in the mouth, lip, or throat
  • White or red patches in the mouth
  • Sore throat or feeling of something stuck in the throat
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking
  • Difficulty moving the jaw or tongue
  • Numbness in the tongue or other areas of the mouth
  • Swelling of the jaw; denture wearers may experience discomfort or a feeling that dentures do not fit properly
  • Ear pain

  • Early detection is vital for successful treatment, and regular dental check-ups provide an excellent opportunity for oral cancer examinations. During these exams, dentists or dental hygienists thoroughly inspect the face, neck, lips, and the entire mouth for potential signs of cancer. However, some areas of the pharynx are not visible during a standard oral cancer exam. Therefore, individuals should discuss with their dentists whether it is necessary for a specialist to check their pharynx, ensuring comprehensive and thorough assessment for early detection and effective intervention. Remember, an oral cancer examination is painless and takes only a few minutes, potentially making a significant difference in one's health and well-being.
